Chrome

Chrome is a web browser developed and supported by Google.

Chrome is one of the most popular browsers in the world and is the default browser installed on most Android devices. It is known for its simplistic design and speedy performance.

In addition to web browsing, the Chrome browser is known for its plethora of apps, which include traditional browser add-ons as well as games, productivity software, entertainment tools, and much more. Chrome strives to be an entire computer experience within a browser. In fact, the Chrome browser provides the foundation for Chrome OS, a stand-alone operating system primarily used in low-cost netbook devices. Chrome OS relies on cloud storage, allowing devices to run without bulky or expensive hard drives.

Frequently Asked Questions

What advantages does Chrome offer over other browsers?

Chrome features a streamlined interface, uncluttered with less-used buttons or menus, and it is one of the fastest web browsers available. Tabs within Chrome each run independently, so if one tab experiences a problem or freezes, Chrome will continue to run and allow you to view content on other open tabs. Google Translate is built into Chrome, allowing you to quickly translate nearly any webpage into your local language. Chrome also features built-in support for many popular web tools, including Adobe Flash and Adobe PDF, so there is no need to install additional software or add-ons to view them.

What are the disadvantages of Chrome?

Browsers can be highly subjective. If you like to customize the look and layout of your browser window, Chrome might not be for you. If you are not embedded into the Google ecosystem, Chrome won’t hold as much appeal as it will for someone who regularly uses Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Calendar. Chrome also does not provide as many privacy options as other popular browsers.

Can I sync Chrome across all my devices?

Chrome is one of the only browsers available on all major desktop and mobile platforms, and it allows users to sync bookmarks, browser settings, history, passwords, and more across all of their devices, regardless of whether or not they are running the same OS.

Are there alternatives to Chrome?

There are a number of other browsers available, depending on your preference and operating system. Apple users more commonly turn to Safari, the default browser for all Apple devices. Many Windows users have traditionally used Internet Explorer for this same reason, though IE was replaced by Microsoft Edge with the release of Windows 10. Among PC users, Chrome, IE, and Mozilla Firefox are the most popular browsers. Opera offers a lightweight alternative, though it lacks support for some add-ons and tools found in the more popular browsers. There are hundreds of lesser-known browsers available, many of them for free, specializing in everything from privacy to speed to gaming. Support and device compatibility varies, but if you’re looking for something outside of the major players, do a web search for alternative browsers or check your favorite app store.
